Screening the good from the bad before filing an appeal
Many cases do not have a strong enough argument or trial court record to have a decent chance of winning. Appellate lawyers provide a valuable service by screening cases.

In my capacity as an appellate lawyer, I frequently interact with appellate Justices. They see my briefs, my motions, and my petitions for writs. And they hear my oral arguments. I hope they find my contributions to the appellate process helpful.
I also do something they don’t see. If they could, they might find it a rather valuable service to them – because it saves them a lot of tedious work.
