Proposition 47 supporters claim success – and deny rise in crime

Supporters are gathering signatures to put a measure on the fall ballot that would roll back portions of the law that made it harder to convict criminals of more serious crimes that bring prison sentences.

If Proposition 47’s supporters must defend the initiative that reduced the chances of incarceration for several felonies at the ballot box this fall, a Senate hearing on Thursday might offer a preview of the case they’ll make to voters.
