Obscure federal act at center of challenge to LGBTQ+ parental notification ban

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 allows parents to access and challenge school records. It could be in line for major changes if Republicans take power later this year.

When the Chino Valley Unified School District sued Gov. Gavin Newsom this week over a law barring the forced outing of transgender students to their parents, it invoked an obscure 50-year-old federal statute.
