Senate Judiciary Committee approves Alameda County judge for federal vacancy

If confirmed by the full Senate, Judge Noel Wise would replace U.S. District Judge Edward J. Davila of San Jose.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Noel Wise, whose past writings drew Republican senators' ire during her nomination hearing for a Northern District of California vacancy, passed a key hurdle Thursday when the Senate Judiciary Committee approved her nomination 11-9.

The vote was on straight partisan lines. Sen. John N. Kennedy, R-LA, was absent.
