Judge questions attorney fee, defendant just wants to finish case

A Los Angeles judge questioned high attorney fees in a seaweed contamination lawsuit but allowed a mediated $160,000 settlement. The defendant was eager to conclude the case.

A distributor of seaweed products agreed to pay $160,000 in attorney fees to the Consumer Advocacy Group in a case alleging lead and cadmium contamination, despite misgivings from Los Angeles County Judge Gail Killefer that the amount might be too high.

"My thought on the attorney's fees is that they seem high to me," Killefer said in a hearing on Thursday. "On the other hand, if this is a mediated settlement, I'm not going to get in the way of it."
