Irvine council weakens hotel worker protections

While the Irvine City Council maintained panic button requirements for worker safety, it removed compensation rules that would have doubled pay for cleaning beyond set room quotas. The decision followed intense lobbying from the hotel industry, drawing sharp criticism from labor advocates.

It's been a week since the Irvine City Council voted 4-2 to roll back portions of a landmark 2022 law that had established workload protections for hotel housekeepers.

The Jan. 28 vote maintains panic button requirements for worker safety but eliminated provisions that would have doubled pay for housekeepers cleaning rooms beyond established thresholds easing the pocketbooks for the owners of the establishments.
