California high court blocks Ford's push to force arbitration in lemon law cases

The state Supreme Court held that arbitration clauses in dealership sales contracts don't extend to the automaker.

The state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that car buyers who sued Ford Motor Company under California's lemon law for defective vehicles cannot be forced into arbitration.

The plaintiffs filed lawsuits against Ford in 2015 and 2016, alleging violations of the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act and other statutes. The cases, later consolidated on appeal, claimed Ford breached express and implied warranties and engaged in fraudulent concealment.
