ORANGE - In the mid-1980s, William F. McDonald, then an Orange County Superior Court judge, switched political parties from Democrat to Republican. He's still a Republican, he says, but describes himself more as a "centrist."

"I'm not comfortable with extremes of either party," said McDonald, who retired from the bench in 2001 and is now an ADR neutral at JAMS.
