Ex-Manson Family Member's Parole Bid Strokes Debate

SAN BERNARDINO - After 33 years behind bars, Leslie Van Houten is almost a political prisoner, her supporters say. Van Houten's release from prison would be so politically unacceptable, they claim, that the state of California continues to deny her parole without any legal basis for doing so. Parole officials have made the gravity of her commitment offense an "insurmountable obstacle."
