Assembly passes bill requiring 50 hours pro bono work for bar applicants

The new mandate would apply to law school students who begin their studies in 2018.

The state Assembly approved legislation Thursday that would require law school students to complete 50 hours of pro bono work prior to admission to the State Bar.

The bill authored by state Sen. Marty Block, D-San Diego, will head back to the Senate for final legislative approval after the 42-31 vote in the Assembly. Gov. Jerry Brown would also have to sign off on the bill ...
