Elizabeth Dole announces veterans project

Former U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole was awarded the 2013 William O. Douglas Award by Public Counsel at the organization's annual dinner, held Sept. 12 at The Beverly Hilton. In her acceptance speech to an audience of roughly a thousand guests, Dole announced a new joint project by Public Counsel's Center for Veterans Advancement, the American Bar Association and the Military Officers Association of America to help wounded or disabled elderly service members and veterans. "Public Counsel's work is a vital lifeline for countless vulnerable citizens, and my foundation is proud indeed to be announcing a new partnership with this great organization to extend legal services to the nation's hidden heroes – America's military and veteran caregivers," she said. At the dinner, which raised $2.3 million for the pro bono law firm, City National Bank received the Corporate Achievement Award, and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP received the Law Firm Pro Bono Award in recognition of its legal support of small businesses and people in need of justice. — Chase Scheinbaum
