On Jan. 15, the 950-lawyer San Francisco behemoth embarked on a yearlong, $3.5 million TV ad campaign on Atlanta's CNN. The day before, on Jan. 12, the firm announced it was raising the bare-bones base pay for its first-year associates from $125,000 to $135,000.
