Ashcroft Washes Hands of Probe, Citing Conflict

WASHINGTON - Attorney General John D. Ashcroft's quick decision Thursday to remove himself from the criminal probe into the collapse of Enron Corp. just as quickly drew questions about why he didn't step away from overseeing last year's massive antitrust settlement between the government and software manufacturer Microsoft, which also contributed to his failed 2000 U.S. Senate campaign.
