Big Trouble at the Big Top

SAN JOSE - The circus goes on trial today. Mark Oliver Gebel, a senior animal trainer with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, faces a misdemeanor charge of abusive behavior toward an elephant. He is accused of jabbing the animal with a metal-tipped plexiglass wand, breaking its skin and drawing blood, just before the elephants marched into the Compaq Center in downtown San Jose for their performance in August.
