SF public defender adds immigration attorney to represent those facing deportation

The San Francisco Public Defender Office hired a civil immigration attorney to assist criminal defendants in immigration court, making it only the second office in the state to do so. Alameda County created a similar position in January.

SAN FRANCISCO - The deluge of deportation cases in a city where nearly 40 percent of residents were born overseas has prompted the public defender's office here to hire its first staff attorney dedicated to assisting criminal defendants in immigration court.
