LOS ANGELES - A jury's $17.7 million award this week against a tobacco company is the first of its kind in several years, the plaintiff's attorney in the case said Thursday.


Following a monthlong trial, a Los Angeles County Superior Court jury unanimously handed the sum to the widow of a retired U.S. naval captain.
