Judiciary tries to address dementia, mental health issues among its own

The slow onset of declining mental health is a serious problem for the federal judiciary, where life tenure means an aging bench.

The bankruptcy judge appeared to show early signs of dementia: slow reaction times, moodiness and memory problems. A lawyer who practiced before the judge said he was familiar with the symptoms because he had a family member similarly afflicted. So the attorney, in a rare move, reported the judge to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals through its judicial misconduct system.
