Charles T. Manatt, founder of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, has died.
Charles T. Manatt, founder of Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, died Friday of complications from a stroke.

From the time Thomas D. Phelps and Charles T. Manatt were classmates at Iowa State University, Phelps said they dreamed of opening their own law firm.
Manatt led the way, opening a solo practice in 1964 in a second-floor walkup above the Pantages Theater on Hollywood Boulevard that he called the "bare light bulb office." There were no employees.
