A retired Ventura County Superior Court judge fatally shot his girlfriend then killed himself during a SWAT team standoff this week, shocking attorneys and jurists who worked with him as a prosecutor, on the bench and as a law firm partner.
Herbert Curtis III, 69, died early Monday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after negotiating for about two hours with SWAT officers, said police.
