Advocates of MICRA reform turn to voter initiative
The state's tort lobby leaders say they're happy with ballot language describing their initiative to increase pain and suffering damages in malpractice suits. But they're still hoping for a bill to increase payouts early next year.

SACRAMENTO - Despite months of lobbying, trial lawyers failed to get a bill introduced to raise California's cap on medical malpractice lawsuit payouts for pain and suffering. While attorneys haven't given up on seeking a bill early next year when the Legislature returns, a ballot initiative by lawyers and consumer advocates to raise the cap is now moving forward in earnest.
