Former state attorney general, federal public defender dies at 81

John K. Van de Kamp, who was the first federal public defender for the Central District of California before becoming state attorney general, died Tuesday at his home in Pasadena. He was 81.

LOS ANGELES — John K. Van de Kamp, who served as district attorney, U.S. attorney and state attorney general and also established the Federal Defender's Office in Los Angeles, died Tuesday at his home in Pasadena. He was 81.
