Harkjoon Paik 1936-2016

Paik, the first Korean-born superior court judge in America, was known for his boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm for the law.

Harkjoon Paik, the first Korean-born superior court judge in U.S. history, died Friday night at his Carmel Valley home after a long illness. He was 79.

Gov. Jerry Brown appointed him to the bench in 1975, after his six-year stint as Monterey County's first public defender.
