Former Chief Justice Malcolm Lucas was known for steady leadership
Malcolm M. Lucas, the former chief justice who steered the state Supreme Court through politically turbulent times and promoted the modernization of the state's judicial branch, died Wednesday of cancer in Los Angeles. He was 89.

State leaders paid tribute to the respected jurist Thursday. Gov. Jerry Brown ordered flags at the State Capitol to be flown at half-staff.
