Big med-tech companies snap up personalized medicine startups

But despite the recent purchases, lawyers predict major deal activity in the sector is a few years off.

Carlsbad-based medical technology maker Life Technologies Inc. has purchased three molecular diagnostics companies in the past three months: PinPoint Genomics Inc., Navigenics Inc. and Compendia Bioscience Inc.


Last month, its San Diego-based competitor Illumina Inc. bought BlueGnome Ltd., a Cambridge, U.K.-based cytogenics company focused on finding abnormalities in cell structures.
