Supreme Court to Define Anew the Right to a Lawyer
WASHINGTON - Taking on an issue with broad impact in California, the Supreme Court agreed Monday to consider whether a controversial 20-year state practice - in which attorneys file criminal briefs that leave it to the appellate courts to find an issue - can constitute ineffective assistance of counsel.
