Justice changes mind in juvenile sentencing case

A state appeals opinion on resentencing juvenile defendants convicted of murder highlights an evolving area of criminal law.

The 4th District Court of Appeal has ordered a trial court to hold a new sentencing hearing for a defendant who was convicted of murder as a teenager and is serving a life-without-parole prison term.

Thursday's result clashes with a February opinion issued by the same court in a separate case. A 4th District justice who heard both cases had an unexplained change of heart.
