Lying to police officer not protected by First Amendment, court rules

A state law that prohibits individuals from knowingly telling lies to police does not violate the Constitution, a state appeals court ruled Friday.

A state law that prohibits individuals from knowingly telling lies to law enforcement does not violate the First Amendment, the 1st District Court of Appeal ruled Friday.

The decision reverses the San Francisco County Superior Court appellate division and reinstates a conviction of defendant Wilson Morera-Munoz for providing false information to a peace officer.
