Court orders attorneys to pay $297 to fund State Bar next year

The special assessment amount is $18 less than the Legislature had mandated lawyers pay the agency in previous years.

The state Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously ordered active State Bar members to pay a $297 assessment to fund the agency's operations in 2017.

The amount of the approved assessment is $18 — or 5.7 percent — less than the basic mandatory fee approved by the Legislature in previous years. The court did not preclude the bar from collecting additional mandatory ...
