SAN FRANCISCO - The State Bar upped the stakes Thursday in its growing rift with the Securities and Exchange Commission. It issued an "ethics alert" warning to its members that many practitioners - not just corporate or securities lawyers - could find themselves caught in a conflict between new SEC rules and state law.
