New law bans mandatory arbitration of civil rights claims

Arbitration critics in California scored a notable victory on Sept. 30, when Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 2617. How long that victory might endure is an open question, however, as both supporters and opponents of the new law expect it will eventually be challenged as pre-empted by the Federal Arbitration Act.
