Ashcroft Denies President Ordered Torture in Iraqi Prison
WASHINGTON - Following reports that Bush administration officials contended that the torture of al-Qaida suspects could be justified under certain circumstances, Attorney General John Ashcroft said Tuesday that the president had not directed any conduct that would violate domestic or international law on the treatment of prisoners.
