Chief Justice Used Fairness As Touchstone of Civil Liberty

Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, who led the court from 1953 to 1969, had a legendary career not only on the court, but also in California as a lawyer and politician. While we were naturally unable to interview Warren, who passed away in 1974, we turned to his memoirs to construct the following question and answer on his impact on the law. Portions of his answers were drawn verbatim from his memoirs; other parts merely relied on his writings for inspiration.
