Emphasizing Privacy’s Importance

In his role as public-policy director of the Center for Democracy and Technology, a privately funded civil liberties group, James X. Dempsey has been front and center lately as Congress debates revising the nation’s domestic-spying laws. But Dempsey has spent much of the last two years in California, waging a one-man evangelical crusade to educate tech companies about privacy rights at a time when the nation’s laws are struggling to keep up with the rapid pace of change.
