SAN FRANCISCO - For the four elephants living just south of Sacramento at the home of the Performing Animal Welfare Society, life appears to be, if not perfect, idyllic. Without the constraints of chains, they are allowed to roam about their pens, take naps in pools of mud and powder their backs with dust.
