Central District hosts Law Day for kids

U.S. District Judge Ronald S.W. Lew, left, with Maywood Academy students, from left: Frankie Guevara, Stephanie Garcia, and Michelle Carrillos. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District hosted some 80 high school students from the greater Los Angeles area for "Law Day" on May 20. The students, who are involved in Junior State of America, staged a mock trial over criminal charges in a texting-while-driving case. U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez and Chief Magistrate Judge Suzanne H. Segal assisted the student judges and provided information about trial practices and procedures. Attorneys from the U.S. attorney's and federal public defender's offices coached the student prosecutors and defense counsel.
