Garment Firms End Suit Over Sweatshops in U.S. Territory

SAN FRANCISCO - Some of the nation's best known retailers, including The Gap Inc., Target and J.C. Penney Co. Inc., reached a $11.25 million global settlement Thursday of federal and state lawsuits that alleged the clothiers conspired to keep thousands of garment workers in the U.S. territory of Saipan in slave-like working conditions.
