WASHINGTON - Public criticism of judicial decisions may serve a useful purpose in our society, but it must not compromise judicial independence, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist told several hundred lawyers, judges and public officials who gathered here Friday for the first National Conference on Public Trust and Confidence in the Justice System.
