A memorial will take place July 31 for retired Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Mark E. Thomas Jr., whose passion for the legal community led him to write a number of books about the history of the local courts, law school and law library.

Thomas, who was diagnosed 16 months ago with prostate cancer, died early Sunday at his San Jose home. He was 80.
