Age-Discrimination Act Nullifies 'Marks' Decision

Gray Davis signed SB26, a new California age-discrimination law that goes into effect Jan. 1, older workers - typically the highest-paid - often bore the brunt of a company's attempts to cut costs through downsizing. And according to the California Court of Appeal, such layoffs did not run afoul of state discrimination laws. See Marks v. Loral Corp. , 57 Cal.App.4th 30 (1997).
