James H. Hastings, 1917-2009

James H. Hastings, a justice with the California Court of Appeal for 14 years who wrote the landmark decision giving patients the right to refuse life-sustaining medical treatment, has died. He was 91.

James H. Hastings, a justice with the California Court of Appeal for 14 years who wrote the landmark decision giving patients the right to refuse life-sustaining medical treatment, has died. He was 91.

Hastings died Tuesday night in his Rancho Palos Verdes home after a battle with cancer, his son Gary Hastings said.
