At the request of Attorney General John Ashcroft, Immigration and Naturalization Service Commissioner James Ziglar expanded the time the INS may detain immigrants while it investigates whether they have violated any laws. The Justice Department also announced that it has detained 75 "immigrants" for "questioning." Forty-nine immigrants were detained as of Sept. 19, and 26 more were detained on Sept. 20.
