High court mulls whether Santa Ana company can be sued

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments Monday over whether plaintiffs can sue a Santa Ana company for violating an anti-kickback law without also showing the violation caused them harm.

WASHINGTON - The two ideological wings of the U.S. Supreme Court appeared at loggerheads Monday over whether plaintiffs can sue a Santa Ana company for violating an anti-kickback law without also showing the violation caused them harm.


In the shadow of that left-right stalemate, moderate Republican Justice Anthony M. Kennedy seemed poised to assume his familiar role of kingmaker in a 5-4 split.
