Competitive, in the courtroom and a canoe

Kere Tickner uses her passion for outrigger canoeing to relieve stress and form lasting friendships.

NEWPORT BEACH — Even as she climbed into the outrigger canoe before her first race, Kere Tickner thought the competition was for beginners.

Friends who invited her failed to explain the details of the Crystal Pier Outrigger Canoeing Race in San Diego — a 10-mile paddle into open ocean. And all she had for breakfast was a muffin and some Gatorade.
