US Justice Department opens civil investigation of OC DA and sheriff's department

The probe will seek to determine whether informants were used to get incriminating statements from inmates who were represented by counsel.

SANTA ANA — The U.S. Department of Justice opened a civil investigation into Orange County's use of jail informants at the request of District Attorney Anthony J. Rackauckas, authorities announced Thursday.
