State Supreme Court upholds strength of land use general plans

The case drew amicus briefs from several California cities that claimed a local government's interpretation of its land use plans are owed deference. Environmental groups that supported the petitioning residents also submitted briefs.

The California Supreme Court on Thursday reversed lower courts' approval of a development in an Orange County city that was based on a resolution instead of the city's general plan, reiterating the importance of the overall planning document in a closely watched case.
