Microsoft moves to take advantage of Google's FTC concession on patents

Attorneys for Microsoft Corp. are moving to take advantage of a concession Google Inc. made in its Federal Trade Commission settlement on standard essential patents that could undermine its legal strategy in the smartphone wars.

Widely seen as a victory for Google Inc., last week's Federal Trade Commission settlement still came with a hitch. The concessions Google had to make on standard essential patents might actually force the Mountain View company to reconsider its litigation strategy, some observers say.


Worse yet, they could undermine Google's position in a cutthroat smartphone market.
