The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to discontinue the collection of $50 upfront fees charged to indigent defendants who sought legal counsel from the public defender's office.
The motion, co-authored by supervisors Mark Ridley-Thomas and Sheila Kuehl, states that the practice "undermines the constitutionally-protected right to counsel."
