You have to forgive analysts for not taking John Hui's $450 million bid for Gateway's retail operations seriously; after all, Gateway didn't either. Hui, the Orange County tech tycoon who co-founded budget PC maker eMachines and sold it to Gateway in 2004, first made the offer on Aug. 3 but only made it public last week after Gateway didn't deign to respond.
