Forum Column - By Margaret Crosby - In June, 2002, a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel breathed life into the Pledge of Allegiance's ideal of a country "with liberty and justice for all." The court held that the pledge, as rewritten during the McCarthy era to insert the words "under God," violated the First Amendment when recited in public schools. Newdow v. U.S. Congress , 292 F.3d 597 (9th Cir. 2002).
