Speculation swirls about governor's choice for state Supreme Court vacancy

There is plenty of guessing over whom Brown will pick to replace Justice Joyce L. Kennard, who announced Tuesday she will step down on April 5, and equally little information.

Gov. Jerry Brown's first pick for the state Supreme Court surprised virtually everyone.


Justice Goodwin Liu, a nominee for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals who was defeated amid conservative opposition, was overlooked in nearly every short list speculating on Brown's favored candidates.
